Cheryl L. Anderson: promoting economic development in Africa

Anderson will attend the 2017 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank. The theme of the Annual Meetings, “Transforming Agriculture for Wealth Creation in Africa,” underscores the critical importance of agriculture in Africa.

Anderson is partaking in the discussion, “Creative Energy Solutions to Boost African Agriculture” during the meetings. She will also meet with donor organizations, country and regional partners, and private sector representatives to discuss shared development priorities.

President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said at a press conference that the Bank has made the highest ever disbursement in its history.

“The Bank disbursed $6.5 billion, the highest ever in the Bank’s history,” he said.

He said the Bank raised $10.5 billion from the international market and maintained its AAA rating, adding that the Bank will continue to mobilise investments by reaching out to sovereign funds and other pension funds.

According to the Bank, the central theme of the meetings, “Transforming Agriculture for Wealth Creation in Africa”, mirrors India’s famous Green Revolution, which saved millions of people from famine and reflects agriculture’s vast linkages to other sectors and its centrality to Africa’s efforts towards poverty alleviation, food security and economic transformation
