The Government of Sudan, the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) met on Sunday in Khartoum for the 25th meeting of the Tripartite Coordination Mechanism on UNAMID to ensure the effective implementation of UNAMID’s mandate in Darfur.
The Sudanese delegation was led by H. E. Ambassador Omer Siddig, the Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Sudan; the AU delegation was led by H. E Ambassador Smail Chergui, the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, the UN delegation was led by Mr. Jean- Pierre Lacroix, Under- Secretary- General for Peacekeeping operations; and the UNAMID delegation was led by the Joint Special Representative Mr. Kingsley Mamabolo.
The three stakeholders reflected a spirit of cooperation and readiness to continue working together as Tripartite Coordination Mechanism, to ensure the effective implementation of UNAMID’s mandate in Darfur. They also appreciated efforts made so far in this regard and encouraged the technical level of the tripartite mechanism to continue its good work on the issues at hand. The meeting stressed the importance of the full implementation of the remaining provisions of DDPD.
Discussions touched on the operational and strategic issues pertaining to UNAMID’s effective mandate implementation, and observed improvements in this regards. GoS reiterated its commitment to continue cooperation with UNAMID on issues referred to as the technical level.

Continued fighting has destabilized millions of people in Darfur
The participants of the meeting agreed on the significant improvement of the security and humanitarian situation in Darfur, which is creating conditions for a further substantial reconfiguration of UNAMID.
They expressed satisfaction about the implementation of UNAMID’s reconfiguration as stated in UNSC resolution 2363 (2017) and the AUPSC Communique of its 691st meeting of 12th June 2017, and the coordinated implementation of UNAMID reconfiguration in phase (1) and phase (2) so far. The meeting also took note of the ongoing work of the Strategic Review on UNAMID being jointly conducted by UN and AU.
