The Head of Delegation European Union Ambassador, Peter Versteeg, has disclosed during the Free Health Care distribution of drugs to the provinces at Fawaz Ware House in Freetown that the European Union in the coming year will pay for the rehabilitation of 6 BEmONC buildings, 5 staff quarters, 4 maternity wings for BEmONC facilities, 2 district pediatric wards, 1 maternity ward, 11 district medical stores, 7 district hospital stores, 1 pediatric wing hospital.
In addition Mr. Versteeg said EU will also fund the construction of the following new structures 1 pediatric and maternity complex, 2 district medical stores, 4 staff quarters and 2 additional Maternity Wards for BEmONC.
He said the health system has been seriously weakened by the Ebola outbreak and its consolidation must take first priority in the recovery efforts being launched by the Government of Sierra Leone with the support from the international community.
The Head of EU further disclosed that the EU will continue to support the government of Sierra Leone in public sector reforms and governance in variety of sectors under the 11th European Development Fund Programme for 2014 to 2020 as well as through specific health and food security recovery initiatives.
